Mount Elbert is the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains of North America, at 14,440 feet, the second highest mountain in the contiguous United States after Mount Whitney in California.  The summit of Mount Elbert is large and broad while the weather can be quite harsh with strong winds.  This mountain is part of the range that follows the Continental Divide – the “backbone of America”.  Many of the streams that originate on the mountain empty into the Arkansas River.  There are three main routes up the mountain which each gain 4100+ feet of elevation.  A worthy hike – A great  mountain.
